Abortion law before high court – ORANGE COUNTY TRIBUNE

The U.S. Supreme Court will begin its next session on Monday in which it face decisions on abortion, gun rights and the separation of church and state.

According to The New York Times, the case with the greatest impact could be an appeal challenging a strict Mississippi law restricting abortion. With six conservatives on the court – all appointed by Republican presidents – the chances for overturning the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision which created a national right to abortion, are considered to be higher than ever.

Some members of the court – including Chief Justice John Roberts – have expressed concern that the public is viewing it more and more as a partisan tribunal, rather than applying the law impartially.

A Gallup Poll finding released in September found that only 40 percent of those surveyed approved of the performance of the court, the lowest since the question was first asked in 2000. Fifty-three percent disapproved, also a new mark.

Deadline on key bills moves to Oct. 31

Will Halloween prove to be a trick or a treat for President Joe Biden? In a letter to Democrats on Saturday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) said that the House of Representatives now have until the end of the month to settle differences on a $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill.

According to United Press International, the passage of that bill is tied to later potential approval of a $3.5 trillion package to expand the social safety net and combat climate change.

Democrats have slim majorities in both houses of Congress, but infighting has made passage problematical.
