Pick up sticks and fight farmers: Haryana CM makes controversial statement

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar made controversial remarks that encouraged violence while speaking at a farmers’ event in the state. He called upon 1000 volunteers from different regions to pick up sticks and fight “furious farmers”.

Reacting to Manohar Lal Khattar’s controversial remarks, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), the umbrella body of over 40 farmer unions that is spearheading the farm agitation, demanded his resignation as the Haryana CM and asked him to issue an apology.

In a purported video of the entire incident, Manohar Lal Khattar can be seen saying that 1000 people with sticks should “treat” farmers, who have been protesting the Centre’s three agri laws that were passed in 2020. “Pick up sticks and answer those furious farmers. We will see everything,” he said.

“If you stay in jail for two-four months, you will become a big leader. Don’t worry about bail,” the Haryana CM added.

The SKM reacted, saying, “In a completely unacceptable and objectionable development, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar is heard in a video clip encouraging (BJP-RSS) volunteers to pick up lathis and attack farmers, even if this means ending up in jails for a few months! It is clear where officials like Ayush Sinha get their impunity from.”

“While the farmers’ movement has explicitly made peace and non-violence as its values, it is clear that the government is acting with murderous intent on its own citizens. SKM severely condemns the BJP CM’s violent intent and demands that he apologize immediately, and resign from his constitutional post,” the SKM added.

Congress’ Rajya Sabha MP Deepender Singh Hooda also demanded the resignation of Manohar Lal Khattar. He said, “Haryana CM himself is instigating people to take up sticks and asking for confrontation with farmers. Does CM want riots?”

“Now it can be guessed that from where did the orders of Karnal SDM to break the heads of the farmers come from. Remaining in the post of [CM], Khattar sahib can prove fatal for the state,” he added.

Meanwhile, sharing the alleged video clip of Manohar Lal Khattar, Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) president Kumari Selja called the entire incident “despicable and shameful”.

Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh also attacked Manohar Lal Khattar. He said, “Should a chief minister make such a provocative statement? Is such a statement inciting violence not an offense under law?”
